How to Keep Your Campervan Warm in Winter

Touring doesn’t have to stop when the temperature drops. With the right preparation and a few smart upgrades, winter campervan adventures can be every bit as enjoyable as summer ones, cosy, quiet, and filled with crisp countryside views.
At Wandahome, we know that comfort is key when travelling year-round. Here’s our complete guide on how to keep your campervan warm in winter and enjoy cold-weather touring in comfort.
1. Check and Service Your Heating System
Before setting off, make sure your campervan heating system is in top working order. Whether you use Truma, Whale, or Alde heating, book a professional service to ensure it’s clean, efficient, and safe.
If you rely on portable heaters, choose ones designed specifically for motorhomes and always use them with proper ventilation. Never block vents or cover heater outlets, and check carbon monoxide alarms before every trip.
Wandahome’s service team can carry out full winter checks to keep your heating system running safely and efficiently.
2. Insulate Windows, Doors, and Floors
Heat escapes quickly through glass and thin metal surfaces. To retain warmth:
- Use thermal blinds or insulated window covers, these reduce condensation and trap heat overnight.
- Fit draft excluders around doors and rooflights.
- Add a thermal curtain between the cab and living area to stop cold air entering from the front.
- Use foam mats or thick rugs on the floor for extra insulation and comfort.
Even small upgrades can make a noticeable difference to indoor temperature and energy efficiency.
3. Use Your Heating Smartly
When it’s freezing outside, it’s tempting to keep the heater on full power, but that can waste energy and drain your gas supply. Instead:
- Warm up the van gradually before bedtime, then lower the temperature overnight.
- Run heating for 15–20 minutes in the morning to take the chill off.
- If using hook-up, switch to electric heating mode where available to save on gas.
Keep vents open slightly to prevent condensation, warmth without airflow can lead to damp.
4. Upgrade Your Bedding and Soft Furnishings
A few comfort upgrades go a long way during winter nights. Invest in:
- Thermal or fleece bedding for quick warmth retention.
- Insulated mattress toppers to block cold from below.
- Extra blankets or sleeping bags rated for low temperatures.
- Thermal curtains for privacy and added insulation.
- Soft furnishings such as cushions, throws, and rugs not only feel homely but help retain heat too.
5. Manage Condensation and Ventilation
Condensation is a common issue in cold weather. Moisture build-up can cause damp, mould, and odours if ignored.
- Wipe down windows each morning with a microfibre cloth.
- Open roof vents briefly each day to release moisture.
- Cook with lids on pans and use extractor fans where possible.
- Use moisture traps or dehumidifier crystals in key areas.
A small amount of daily ventilation keeps your van dry and comfortable, even when it’s freezing outside.
6. Keep Water Systems Protected
Frozen water tanks and pipes are a real risk in sub-zero temperatures.
- Drain external water tanks overnight or when parked up for long periods.
- Use insulated pipe covers and tank blankets where possible.
- Keep internal heating on low to prevent freezing inside.
- Carry a spare container for fresh water in case taps freeze.
If you’re storing your campervan between trips, drain the system completely or book a professional drain-down at Wandahome.
7. Choose the Right Campsite
Many UK sites now stay open all year, but not all offer full winter facilities. Look for:
- Hardstanding pitches (to avoid muddy ground).
- Electric hook-ups for heating.
- Heated washrooms and on-site drying rooms.
- Locations with good road access in case of snow or frost.
Before travelling, check weather forecasts and site availability, some locations operate reduced services during winter.
8. Keep Yourself Warm Too
Your own comfort is just as important as your campervans. Pack thermal clothing, waterproof outerwear, insulated footwear, and reusable hand warmers. Hot drinks, hearty meals, and a warm blanket make a big difference after a chilly walk.
A compact fan heater or electric blanket is a great option when you’re on hook-up.
