Campervans vs Caravans: A comprehensive guide

Posted 24/06/2025

In this edition of our blog, we’ll explore the differences between campervans and caravans so that you can decide which best suits your lifestyle, travel goals and budget. Whatever your goals - spontaneous weekend getaways, a couple of weeks around the UK or much longer road trips into Europe – making sure you choose the right vehicle can be crucial. From mobility to maintenance, we’ll break things down into simple language so that your choice becomes clearer when you come and view the new campervans and caravans available here at Wandahome!

What is a campervan?

A campervan is a self-contained vehicle combining a method of transport plus living space. Usually based on a van chassis, a campervan will typically feature built-in sleeping arrangements, a compact kitchen area and sometimes a small bathroom.

Key features of a campervan

  • Everything within one vehicle
  • Easy to drive and park
  • Ideal for touring and short stays
  • Quick to set up upon arrival

Typical uses of a campervan: Perfect for spontaneous breaks, road trips with multiple stops and longer trips for adventurers who value flexibility. Many couples and solo travellers enjoy the ease of campervan life, especially for weekends away or when travelling light.

What is a Caravan?

A caravan is a trailer focused solely on accommodation and, unlike campervans, must be pulled by another vehicle (which must be compatible), usually a car or SUV. Once unhitched at a campsite, the vehicle that has towed the caravan is free for local travel.

Key features of a caravan

  • Towed by a separate vehicle
  • Spacious and homely interiors
  • Includes bathroom and kitchen
  • Needs a designated parking or pitch space

Typical uses of a caravan: Caravans are most often used for longer stays at campsites or holiday parks. Families often prefer caravans as they provide larger living spaces and homely comforts, which makes them ideally suited for extended holidays.

Key differences between campervans and caravans

Although the idea of a caravan and the idea of a campervan are broadly similar (ie. They are both mobile leisure vehicles that provide comfortable environments) there are, of course, some key differences.

Mobility and convenience

Campervans: Offer manoeuvrability, especially in urban environments, on winding country roads or when exploring off-the-beaten-track destinations. You can park almost anywhere and hit the road at a moment’s notice, making them the ideal leisure vehicle for adventure seekers.

Caravans: Travel requires more planning, especially when navigating narrow roads or booking pitches in advance. Once set up, they offer a comfortable base, but they’re less convenient for last-minute changes or on-the-go exploring.

Driving vs towing

Campervans: Similar to driving a large car or van. Everything is contained ‘in one box’ so there's no need to worry about towing weights or reversing with a trailer, so campervans are more appealing to first-time drivers and ‘steady’ motorists.

Caravans: Towing demands a bit more skill and confidence. It may require a specific driving licence, especially for heavier models, and adds complexity to reversing, overtaking and driving on motorways or narrow lanes.

Set-up time and effort

Campervans: Setup with a campervan is virtually instant. You can just park, level if needed, and you’re pretty much ready. Especially useful for frequent stops and quick set-offs, as there’s no need for extensive preparation.

Caravans: Setting up involves unhitching, levelling, connecting electricity and water and sometimes adjusting the stabilisers. It takes longer, but once done, it provides a stable, homely base for more extended stays.

Comfort and living space

Campervans: Generally, more compact, prioritising function and efficiency over space. Very well suited to suit solo travellers or couples but could feel cramped for larger groups or longer stays unless carefully planned and organised.

Caravans: More spacious and with better separation of living areas. Many caravans include fixed beds, roomy lounges and good-sized kitchens. Ideal for families or travellers who value comfort on extended holidays.

Storage and parking

Campervans: Due to their compact size, campervans can often be stored at home (on the drive or in the garage) and may even double as a second vehicle for day-to-day domestic use. However, local parking regulations may still apply in some areas.

Caravans: Typically require off-site storage, unless there is a large driveway or garden available at home. Caravan size makes them less practical for home parking, and storage costs can add to the expenses of long-term ownership.

Running costs

Campervans: Tend to have higher running costs, including fuel, MOTs, servicing and motor insurance. However, these are offset to a degree if you also use the campervan as a day-to-day vehicle.

Caravans: With no engine to maintain, caravans are much more economical in terms of servicing. However, your car is likely to consume more fuel during periods of towing, and certain upgrades (like movers) add to the overall cost.

Insurance and maintenance

Campervans: Being motor vehicles, campervans require you to have standard road tax and insurance, and undergo regular mechanical servicing. Interior fittings also need upkeep, especially for onboard plumbing and electrical systems during winter storage.

Caravans: Need separate insurance, but costs are usually much lower than campervans. Regular maintenance includes checking tyres, damp prevention, brakes and habitation systems, particularly if the caravan is stored for months without use.

Holiday style and flexibility

Campervans: Ideal for people who enjoy spontaneous trips and frequently change locations. Travellers can comfortably move from one spot to another without having to pack up each time.

Caravans: Suit a slower-paced holiday style. Once set up at a site, you can settle in for weeks with home-like comfort. Caravans are especially popular among families and those who like to return to the same site regularly.

Campervans v Caravans - which is right for you?

To help you decide whether to opt for a campervan or pick a caravan, you should closely consider your travel style and budget, plus who you’ll be travelling with.

Weekend breaks: A campervan might be ideal if you’re intending to take frequent weekend breaks. It will allow for quick departures, minimal set-up and spontaneous travel.

Touring multiple destinations: Campervans offer unmatched flexibility for road trips across the UK or even into Europe. There’s no need to book multiple pitches in advance.

Families with kids: Caravans tend to be more spacious and practical for family use, especially with fixed beds and large seating areas. Adults and children alike can ‘spread out’ much more than they would be able to in a campervan.

Budget-conscious: Caravans usually come with a lower upfront cost. If you already own a tow vehicle, it can be a very cost-effective wat to get a leisure vehicle.

Limited storage or parking: Campervans may be easier to store at home, and you could also use them for day-to-day domestic driving.
