Not only does Wandahome offer you great family caravans for sale, but through our blog we also supply you with plenty of tips and ideas for the on-the-road lifestyle.

When you’re in a motorhome or caravan for multiple nights during a staycation, there can be the odd moment when you’ve run out of ideas or things to do. Obviously there are plenty of things you can do to keep yourselves entertained outside the vehicle – BBQs, frisbee or swing ball competitions and so on…

Maybe it’s raining outside, and you need to stay within the vehicle for the evening, but you’ve already burned through your ways to keep things swinging along? Or maybe you’ve all decided it’s time for some bonding after a niggly day on the road (it happens from time-to-time!).

In this edition of our blog we’re going to offer some great suggestions for things you can to do to keep everyone occupied, upbeat and entertained during downtime on motorhome or caravan holidays.

Sound and Vision

Unlike being back at home where you can just crash on the sofa in front of the TV, being on the road in caravans and motorhomes can require a little more creativity when it comes to relaxation. After all, you don’t go on holiday just to watch TV, do you?

Having said all that, there’s no leisure vehicle law that says you can’t watch TV if you want to (and if your vehicle has all of the necessary gear so that it’s ‘plumbed in’ correctly). Maybe you can tune in to an episode of something over mealtimes or last thing, all of you gathered together to share in it. This may even become a bit of a decompression point at the later stages of each day – making your way through a really gripping series, an episode per night, or a classic film. You’ll certainly have things to talk about the next day!

Music in a motorhome or caravan is a little different to how it is back home. As portable devices and streaming services have increased in the last fifteen or so years and ‘cancelled out’ the ritual nature of gathering together to listen to music via records, it has become more of a wallpaper soundtrack than an entertainment event. However, you never know. There might be moments on the road when the most entertaining memories spontaneously occur as you all start singing along!

Board Games

Taking along a couple of board games is a smart thing to do. There’s nothing quite like a family playing board games and setting up a sort of ‘league’ system where points are scored for each win at that particular game. By the end of the holiday there will be a champion who can laud it over everyone else – the losers! If you are the sort of family which just likes to play for fun and isn’t super-competitive, then board games can also be a low-risk way to relax.

For mentally taxing games there’s the classic word-based Scrabble and the ‘a bit of everything’ Cranium, or you could play something classic and much more physically involving like Operation or Kerplunk. Plenty of laughs lie ahead with either of these. Of course, you could always take along a deck of cards and play traditional card games.

Books

Buzzing in the ether around your motorhome or caravan will be the sense of escape and adventure – but you can double up on this by taking along a good book or two. Reading is such a fantastic way to relax in private to immerse yourself in a secret world. There’s also something great about ‘going analogue’ and having actual books rather than taking along a digital reader. Although you can store several on there, it’s no substitute for holding printed paper. That’s a big part of the magic.

Get Creative

Being good at creative things is not for everyone – or, rather, not everyone is good at creative things. That, though, misses the point entirely. Other than for the very best, creativity is all about the journey rather than the destination. So, take along some brushes and some paints, or a sketchpad and some pens and pencils.

Out amidst all the beautiful scenery you’ll encounter on your trip, inspiration is certain to strike, and you are going to want to ‘record’ the views in some way. Sure, take some photos and stick them on your social media, but how about trying to express your thoughts and feelings about the place into a painting or drawing, too? In the end that might provide you with a great souvenir after your trip – and it’ll certainly fill some time in the evenings during it.

At Wandahome we love hearing from our happy customers about their on the road experiences – the places they’ve been, of course, but also the things they’ve done to keep themselves occupied during their non-travel time in the vehicle. You can see what vehicles we’ve currently got on offer at Wandahome by taking a simple browse round our website, and giving us a shout via our contact form if there’s something which takes your fancy or if you want to ask us anything.
