Do I Need Caravan Insurance?

Thinking about caravan insurance and not sure where to start? Our ultimate guide to caravan insurance will help you navigate all the important questions and hopefully give you the best advice when it comes to taking care of your tourer. In this guide we'll go through the basics, like UK laws, the different insurance options, how much it might cost, and other key things every caravan owner should know. It's a simple guide for all things caravan insurance. Let’s begin with the first essential question.

Is it a legal requirement to insure a caravan in the UK?

The simple answer is “No”.

However, while there isn't a legal obligation to insure your caravan in the UK, it's worth noting the rising theft rates. In 2022, there was a 7% increase, leading to over 4,000 caravans being stolen. Given these numbers, having caravan insurance seems like a wise decision, even if it's not a legal requirement.

Why might I choose to insure my caravan anyway?

Choosing to insure your caravan provides peace of mind against unforeseen damages and thefts. When on the road, caravans can face risks such as collisions, especially during towing, or weather-related damages like those from high winds. Misjudging the caravan's width can also lead to accidents with obstacles such as kerbs, fences and other vehicles. Moreover, theft of unsecured caravans, even at service areas, is a concern. Insurance policies often suggest using security measures like hitch locks and wheel clamps to prevent this. Insuring your caravan helps cover these potential losses and gives you confidence you need during your travels.

What kind of caravan cover do I need?

When considering caravan insurance, you might want to consider the following types of cover:

1. Loss or damage cover: for fire, theft, flood and storm damage.

2. Contents cover: for travelling with valuable items.

3. Accidental damage cover: in case you damage your caravan whilst towing.

4. "New for old" vs "market value" cover.

"New for old" vs "market value" caravan insurance cover

When choosing caravan insurance, it's essential to understand the difference between "new for old" and "market value" coverage:

"New for old" cover: Under this type of policy, if your caravan is damaged beyond repair or stolen, the insurance company will replace it with a brand-new model of the same make and specification. This means even if you've had your caravan for several years, if something happens to it, you'll receive a brand-new caravan in its place.

"Market value" cover: With this type of insurance, if your caravan is written off or stolen, the insurance company will pay out what the caravan was worth at the time of the loss. This means the pay-out will be based on the caravan's current value, which takes into account depreciation. For instance, if you bought your caravan for £20,000, and after a few years, its market value has dropped to £12,000, then you'd receive £12,000 from the insurer if it was stolen or written off.

When deciding between the two, consider how much financial risk you're willing to take and how much you'd be willing or able to pay to replace your caravan if something were to happen. "New for old" tends to be more expensive but provides comprehensive coverage, while "market value" is generally cheaper but might not offer as much if you need to make a claim.

Do I need caravan insurance while my caravan is parked at home?

Caravan insurance is important even when it's parked at home. Expensive caravans attract thieves, and lights may not always scare them off. Although security features help, unexpected events like floods or falling trees can damage caravans. If you store your caravan off your property, many insurers prefer and might even offer discounts for using secure, CaSSOA (Caravan Storage Site Owners' Association) such as Wandahome’s own caravan storage facilities.

Will my car insurance cover my caravan?

Typically, car insurance policies protect your vehicle during caravan towing but don't cover caravan damage in collisions. Most policies explicitly exclude caravans, emphasising the importance of separate caravan insurance.

Will the contents of my caravan be covered?

Content coverage depends on your insurance provider. It's crucial to check if they cover both the UK and Europe. Additionally, it's worth checking your home insurance, as some policies might cover items outside of the home.

How much does caravan insurance cost?

Various factors influence caravan insurance premiums including:

Your caravan's make and model.

Security measures, including trackers.

Caravan storage location.

Content value.

Your residence.

Your age.

The cost of your caravan cover will therefore depend on a variety of different factors, as well as the type of cover you take out. Check with your insurance cover at the quote stage to be sure of what you’re receiving.

How can I lower my caravan insurance premium?

Increasing your caravan's security can lead to lower insurance premiums. While wheel clamps may be a basic requirement, adding ground anchors and hitch posts can deter theft. Keeping your caravan at a CaSSOA approved site might also reduce costs. Trackers might be mandatory for pricey caravans, but installing them on cheaper ones can also get you discounts. Joining the Central Reservation and Identification scheme (known as CRiS) can go a long way in helping you recover your caravan if stolen.

What driving licence do I need to tow a caravan?

In the UK, the driving licence required to tow a caravan depends on when you passed your driving test and the combined weight of the vehicle and caravan:

Licences issued before 1 January 1997: If you passed your car driving test before this date, you're usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). This means you can generally tow a caravan without needing to take an additional test.

Licences issued on or after 1 January 1997: If you passed your driving test on or after this date, you can:

- Drive a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM.

- Tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg.

- For anything heavier, you'd need to pass the car and trailer driving test (category B+E).

Always check the specifics of your licence and the weight of the vehicle and caravan to ensure you're driving legally. Additionally, it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the latest regulations and requirements as they can change.

Will my car insurance policy cover me for towing a caravan in Europe?

If you have European cover on your car insurance, you can tow outside the UK. While standard policies offer 30-day European coverage, some provide up to 90 days. When comparing caravan insurance quotes, check for the European cover option. Remember, each country might have distinct towing regulations. For details, consult The Caravan Club.

What are the UK towing and caravan regulations?

Adhering to UK regulations ensures safety and avoids fines or licence points, potentially increasing future insurance costs, the most important things to consider are as follows:

Caravan width: Max width is 2.55 metres (8ft).

Caravan length: For vehicles up to 3,500 kg, the caravan/trailer limit is 7 metres (23ft).

Towing bars: Must meet EU regulations. For cars used before 1 August 1998, approval isn't needed.

Towing mirrors: Essential for clear rear views. Failing to fit them could lead to a £1,000 fine and penalty points.

Number plates: Your trailer/caravan should display the same plate as your car.

Trailer lights: Ensure all lights function. Requirements include red side lights, break lights, amber indicators, and triangular rear reflectors. If wider than 1.3 metres, a fog lamp is mandatory.

To summarise, the decision to get caravan insurance isn't just about legality, but about ensuring peace of mind on your journeys. Our comprehensive guide has aimed to clarify the complexities surrounding caravan insurance in the UK, highlighting its importance, the types of coverage available, and the various factors that can influence your premiums. Remember, while it might not be a legal must-have, insuring your caravan can protect your investment from unexpected incidents, thefts, and damages. With this knowledge in hand, you're better equipped to make an informed decision tailored to your caravanning needs.
